The Financial Review

Author Checklist for First (and Later) Round Submission

  • A submitted paper must be the original work of the author(s) listed on the title page, must not have been published nor accepted for publication, and must not be under consideration for publication elsewhere at any time during the review process (unless withdrawn from submission to FR by notice to and acknowledgement of the editor).

  • Authors of an accepted or under review paper must not allow the results to appear in other publications (beyond normal academic citations and brief quotes), before the paper is published in or rejected by The Financial Review, without approval from the Editors. When in doubt, please ask. (After publication, Wiley-Blackwell on behalf of the EFA is responsible for reprint approval.)

  • Most common ways of circulating unpublished working papers are not considered publication for the above purposes. Because we have received several questions, we provide the following examples of actions that are not considered prior publication:

Oral presentation at a conference.

Posting on the author's web site for downloading free of charge.

Posting for downloading free of charge through Social Science Research Network, ideas.repec.org or similar services.

Inclusion in the NBER working paper series.

Inclusion in a conference proceedings volume (electronic or hard copy) is harder to classify, because the term can mean different things to different business disciplines and different finance conferences. Unfortunately, we have to be bit legalistic. To avoid being considered prior publication, the proceedings volume must meet all the following criteria: 1) A paper accepted for and presented at the conference is not subject to further peer review after the conference to determine proceedings acceptance (review only to improve the paper is acceptable); 2) the proceedings volume is distributed without separate charge and only to conference registrants or individual members of the society holding the conference (not non-member or institutional subscribers, such as libraries), or is a web site available to the public without cost or registration; 3) the proceedings volume is not designated by the author, author's employer, conference or society as a "journal" or "publication" or the equivalent or part thereof.

Citation of the paper by other academic papers (which is encouraged, of course.)

  • Direct (verbatim) quoting from someone else's published or unpublished work, or the authors' own published work, without proper attribution is considered plagiarism and grounds for rejection or cancellation of acceptance. Including the source in the reference list is not sufficient attribution by itself. Even arguably routine details from a published paper with identical authorship to the submission should be rephrased, not simply copied in large blocks.

  • To facilitate blind review, the authors must be identified on the title page and nowhere else.

  • The page following the title page should repeat the title and also include an abstract. (Should the paper be accepted, the final abstract must be 100 words or fewer).

  • Please be kind to the editors and reviewers: use a 12-point font, double space the body text, leave at least a one inch (2.5 cm) margin all around and provide page numbers on all pages after the title and abstract pages.

  • Please use footnotes (or no notes), not endnotes, to make it easy for the editors and reviewers to refer to them.

  • Please be aware that we typically require the author to have a conditionally accepted paper professionally edited by our designated technical writing editor. The arrangement and expense of such editing, when required, are the author's responsibility.

  • We accept only electronic manuscripts. Submission fees may be paid electronically or by U.S. check.

We are delighted to announce that Manuscript Central, our new online submission and reviewing site, is now accepting new submissions. Papers originally submitted under our old system aren't being transferred to Manuscript Central at this time, so we offer separate sets of manuscript preparation instructions below.

For first round submissions and future resubmissions of papers originally submitted July 28, 2008 or later:

  • The paper can be in Word, LaTeX, RTF, PostScript, PDF or other file formats. Manuscript Central automatically converts uploaded files into an anonymous PDF (and many formats into a second HTML version also) for blind review.
  • The title page must be uploaded as a separate file and not included in the main body file.
  • Other than the title page, the paper can be all in one file or divided into multiple files (e.g., body text, figures, tables, etc.). Manuscript Central combines multiple files automatically.
  • You can upload or type in an optional cover letter during online submission.
  • For resubmissions, please provide a separate response to each reviewer in Word or PDF format.
  • New! Our Express Decision option provides about a one month turnaround, guaranteed (click here to find out how this new optional service works).
  • Click here to pay the submission fee or here to go directly to Manuscript Central if the fee has been paid.

For resubmissions of papers originally submitted through our old system only (first submission of the paper was before July 28, 2008):

  • Revised papers being handled under our old system must be in PDF format with all fonts embedded.
  • Please submit one PDF that contains all parts of the revised paper, including a normal title page that identifies the authors. We create our own blinded PDF for the referee without the title page, but we ask that a normal title page be included in the submitted file for use by the editors and staff.
  • Please include replies to the referees as separate PDF attachments.
  • Please be aware that should the paper ultimately be accepted for publication, the final version also will need to be submitted in a single Word document (or a document format that can be opened in Word without loss of content or formatting) or a LaTeX file. Please continue to submit revised papers being handled under our old system only in PDF format until otherwise instructed.
  • Please follow the instructions in the editorial decision letter to pay the resubmission fee and submit the revised paper.
